Wednesday October 14, 2009 Picked up NAPS food at Waite House. (Nutritional Assistance for Seniors; I suspect P stands for the ghost of "Program.")

***I now have a solid beginning for "Down Among the Sane Men."

***I dreamed passages from _Gone With the Wind_, a book I've never read. I'm not sure how much like the waking-world book this version was. I don't think Margaret Mitchell's male aristocrats had an elaborate whistle language.

If Confederate officers had had a whistle language, some American Civil War battles would probably have gone differently. Which ones, and how, I don't know enough to speculate about.

Thursday October 15, 2009 When Rainbow supermarkets were bought by Roundys (a Wisconsin company), one change was the abolition of Rainbow's rewards cards. A few months ago, Rainbow instituted something new -- rewards cards. At that time, the only reward to be earned was ten cents off on up to 12 gallons of gasoline at BP stations. (Note: American gallons are 4/5 the size of Imperial gallons.) I don't drive, and I'm unlikely to be near a BP station.

There were to be other rewards later, I was told. I got the card.

In today's mail: a bundle of fliers, including one from Rainbow. Now my Roundys card can earn me free food. For each $525 spent between 10/11/09 and 12/19/09, I will get a $10 Rainbow gift card. Qualified purchases only, card must be gotten before 12/26/09.

This is a return on investment of slightly under two percent. That's not counting the money I could save by shopping around rather than buying everything at Rainbow. And I'm unlikely to spend that much on groceries.

Alternatively: if I buy $20 worth of Kellog's cereal or Yoplait yogurt between 10/8/09 and 12/2/09, I will get $5 off my next shopping order of $5 or more.

***The Minneapolis Daily (University of Minnesota student paper): "The University of Minnesota Transgender Commission is attempting to raise awareness about restroom access on campus, not only for members of the transgender community but for the disabled, chronically ill and anyone who is made uncomfortable by gender-specific public restrooms." The goal is single-stall nongendered bathrooms throughout the campus. But there's another approach: "In Ford Hall, the Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies Department installed a multi-stall, gender-neutral bathroom in 2008, which is lockable and has operated without incident."

***Attended ACA meeting. (Adult Children Anonymous.)

***Radio news: The British National Party has been told it has to admit the wrong kind of people. People who aren't pure Caucasians, or otherwise aren't really British.
